Why does independent research in the music industry matter? What do we hope folks will do or change given research findings? What steps can individuals and organizations in the music industry take to support and make change and to prioritize research? What do we hope for the future of the music industry (… and what do we think is possible)?
So honoured to be part of a Measure of Music panel on Music Research in 2024 alongside Dr. George Musgrave (Goldsmiths, University of London) and Sarah Kloboves and Melina Raglin from Chartmetric. The panel was moderated by Janishia Jones, who wrote the incredible report “A Seat at the Table: A Perspective on Women of Color in the Music Business“.
Focusing on diversity (or the lack thereof) on country format radio, my presentation shares a summary of SongData research done, with an update on representation in 2024 and a discussion of how country radio responded to Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em”.
Download my presentation deck: “‘then the rejection came, said I wasn’t country ‘nough”: diversity (or the lack thereof on country format radio“. These slides include not just those presented at Measure of Music, but extra slides on curated playlists at Apple and Spotify, and festival data curated by my colleague Abbey Carbonneau of Book More Women.
